This is the actual story of April 2026. Not “AI is getting better.” That is obvious. The story is that machine-to-machine coordination is finally becoming a procurement decision. Interoperability, governance, and runtime economics have left the lab. They are entering budgets, org design, and competitive strategy.

The Industry Finally Stopped Confusing Intelligence With Infrastructure

Anthropic Just Did for Agents What Cloud Platforms Did for Apps

If Google is helping define the roads, Anthropic is trying to industrialize the vehicles. Managed Agents are interesting for one reason above all: they treat autonomous work like infrastructure instead of theater.

The strongest number in the OutSystems report is not the 96% adoption headline. It is the contradiction underneath it. Enterprises are clearly moving, but they are moving messily. Only 12% have implemented a centralized platform to manage agent sprawl. Just 49% describe their agentic capabilities as advanced or expert. A full 38% are mixing custom-built and pre-built agents, which is another way of saying they are constructing a future security incident out of enthusiasm and YAML.

The report also says 52% of organizations now rely on a human-on-the-loop model. That is the right phrase, and it matters. Human-in-the-loop was always too expensive for scale. Human-out-of-the-loop is reckless. What Happens Next Is Brutal and Predictable

Once agent coordination becomes standardized, three ugly truths hit the market fast.

  1. Software categories start collapsing into labor categories. Buyers stop asking “which app does this?” and start asking “which agent can own this workflow cheaper and better?”
  2. Middle-layer white-collar work gets repriced. Not all of it disappears, but a shocking amount of it turns into exception handling around automated systems.

The winners will look more like traffic control systems for machine work. They will route tasks, verify identity, meter cost, enforce policy, and swap out underlying models without rewriting the company every quarter. That is what “enterprise-ready agents” actually means, and holy shit, it is much less glamorous than the demo crowd hoped. It is mostly plumbing. Profitable plumbing.
